For the Chinese, tea is more than just a drink. It can also mean:
• A sign of respect to others (especially to the elderly and higher authority) - It is a common custom for the younger Chinese to offer their elders a cup of tea to signify that they respect and love them. During the olden times, it is even a common practice for individuals of lower status to offer tea to those of higher status to them but now it is mutually shared among people. The times have changed in China and they are now open-minded and liberated in thinking. Parents can offer teas to their children as a sign of love and affection. Bosses can even give and offer tea to his or her employees as a sign of goodwill.
• A way to get in touch with family - Eventually, children have to grow up and face the real world- by finding their place in society by working and settling down. And most often, they may not have the time to visit their parents. And parents usually miss out on their lives - such as meeting and taking care of their grandchildren. So the Chinese invite their parents o drink tea at restaurants as a way to get reunited with them. It is considered an important family activity and a touch to catch up with family and loved ones. This is the reason why during Sundays, Chinese restaurants are full of families and is very crowded. It is more evident during special occasions and festivals.
• A person's way to show remorse and ask for forgiveness - For the Chinese, mere words are not enough to express their heartfelt sorry during the times when they offended someone. Action speaks more than words. By pouring a cup of tea, the person expresses his regret and remorse for wronging a person. If the person drinks the tea, it means the person has acknowledge the person's attempt and intention and accepts his or her apology.
• A sign of submission - Especially during the olden times, a person offering tea to another is a sign of submission. Only people with lower rank give tea to the other. And even now, it is still practiced in formal ceremonies. And even up to this day, children offer and serve tea to their parents as a sign of not only respect but also a sign of submission.
• A way to say thank you - In marriages of Chinese, it is expected of the groom and bride to show their gratefulness and thanks to the elders, especially to their parents. They kneel or bow and offer and serve tea to their parents. It is also a sign of acknowledgement of the love they gave them in order for them to be raised as mature individuals. It is also a special tribute to their sacrifices as parents. In return, the parents drink the tea being offered and give them a red envelop to signify good luck to their marriage.
• Tapping of the fingers on the table is also a special way of saying thank you to the giver of tea. After a person fills the cup of tea for another, the recipient mayh actually bend their fingers (index and middle) on the table as a way of being grateful to the other person. This is a common practice by the Cantonese, but normally, in other parts of China, this is only done if the recipient could not actually say "thank you" in words, such as when you are in a middle of a conversation with another. It just provides an alternative.
